
19 The Jews in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John. The Jews sent them to ask him, “Who are you?”

20 John spoke openly and did not refuse to answer. He said plainly, “I am not the Christ.”

21 The Jews asked John, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah? ”John answered,“ No, I am not Elijah. ”The Jews asked,“ Are you a prophet? ”John answered,“ No, I am not a prophet. ”

22 Then the Jews asked, “Who are you? Tell us about yourself. Answer us so we can tell those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? ”
John 1:22
23 And John spake unto them the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

24 These Jews were sent by the Pharisees.

25 They said to him, “You say that you are not the Christ. You say, “You are neither Elijah nor a prophet. Why then do you baptize people? ”
John 1:25
26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
John 1:26
27 He is the one who will come after me. I can’t even untie his shoes. “
John 1:27
28 All these things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan. John baptized people there.
